Analysis of the Systematic Errors in the Positions of BATSE Catalog Bursts
نویسندگان
چکیده
We analyze the systematic errors in the positions of bursts in the BATSE 1B, 2B and 3B catalogs, using a likelihood approach. We use the BATSE data in conjunction with 196 single IPN arcs. We assume circular Gaussian errors, and that the total error is the sum in quadrature of the systematic error σsys and statistical error σstat, as prescribed by the BATSE catalog. We find that the 3B burst positions are inconsistent with the value σsys = 1.6 ◦ stated in the BATSE 3B catalog.

A Test of Gamma Ray Burst Recurrence in the Batse 3b Data Set
We analyse the BATSE 3B catalog using the pair-matching statistic. This statistic counts only the burst pairs which may have originated from the same source, so it is less likely to yield false detections of \repeating bursts" than the nearest neighbor and correlation function statistics. Even in the ideal case when repeating is the only possible source of burst correlations, the pair matching ...
متن کاملThe Error Distribution of Batse Grb Locations
Empirical probability models for BATSE GRB location errors are developed via a Bayesian analysis of the separations between BATSE GRB locations and locations obtained with the InterPlanetary Network (IPN). Models are compared and their parameters estimated using 392 GRBs with single IPN annuli and 19 GRBs with intersecting IPN annuli. Most of the analysis is for the 4Br BATSE catalog; earlier c...
متن کاملThe Nearest Neighbors of Batse Gamma-ray Bursts: Narrowing the Possibilities
The large errors in the locations of gamma-ray bursts observed by the Bursts and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) forces one to adopt statistical comparisons of the burst catalog to models of burst isotropy to determine if bursts are repeating or clustered. In the rst BATSE catalog 1 , a nearest neighbor analysis nds a deviation from isotropy. 2 In a recent article 3 It was shown that known ...
متن کاملProbing the Small-scale Angular Distribution of Gamma-ray Bursts with Combined Batse/ulysses 4b Locations
We investigate the angular distribution of gamma-ray bursts using the largest catalog of welllocalized events that is currently available—combined BATSE/Ulysses burst locations. We present the preliminary spatial analysis of 415 BATSE/Ulysses bursts included in the BATSE 4B catalog. We find that the locations are consistent with largeand small-scale isotropy, with no significant clustering or r...
متن کاملGamma-Ray Bursts from Extragalactic Magnetar Flares
The prototype for events that we call MFs—“March Fifth” events or “Magnetar Flares”—was observed on March 5, 1979. There is evidence that MFs are powered by catastrophic magnetic instabilities in ultra-magnetized neutron stars. These events begin with brief (∆t ∼ 0.1–1 s), intense, hard spikes of gamma rays, probably emitted in concurrence with relativistic outflows; followed by long (t ∼ 100 s...
